How to Research Competitors on LinkedIn Ads (2021) + FREE CHEATSHEET

If you’re in the B2B or SaaS spaces then getting ahead of the competition will prove to be tough. Both tend to be very competitive so any advantage you can get is more than welcome.

LinkedIn Ads is no different from any other platform in this regard. You’re going to want to have an aggressive strategy that includes competitor research and if you don’t know how to do this, don’t worry because we’re going to show you what LinkedIn Ads competitor research involves.

The tips and strategies we’re going to show you are ones which we use on our own clients and which contribute to the successful campaigns we’ve run for them. So, without further ado, let’s get into it.

Basic Competitor Research on LinkedIn Ads

The simplest way of researching competitors through LinkedIn Ads is to go directly to their LinkedIn page. Once you’re there, scroll down to the Posts section and click the Ads tab.

Where do you go from here? Well, that’s an open-ended question that will depend on what you’re looking for. Here are a few tips on what to take note of:

  • Look at the visuals your competitors are using. Think about the colors they’re using, the types of images they use, and the copy they use as part of the visual.
  • Consider their call-to-action. Are they going straight for sales or are they running sequential ads? What are the call-to-actions that they’re using in these ads?
  • Look at the types of LinkedIn Ads they’re running. Maybe they’re only running static images but nowadays, you’ll see that video ads are gaining popularity. Different audiences respond to different types of ads, so keep this in mind when looking into competitors.

Most importantly, make a list of the weaknesses of their ads. In other words, what would you do to improve their ads? This is a powerful question that will help you to construct your own ads without making those same mistakes.

Researching a Competitor's Sales Funnel

Even if you’re only interested in the LinkedIn Ads they’re running, it’s worth looking at the rest of their sales funnel. What our team will typically do is look through a competitor’s ads and go to some of the landing pages they’re trying to draw potential customers to.

Doing this has the same benefits as before. You can get some ideas for your landing page design, including the type of copy they use and the page’s layout, and you can also point out some of their weaknesses so that you avoid those.

This is going to take up more of your time, but trust us when we say it’s worth it. You’re going to find out what elements and offers they’re using to get people to take a higher intent action (e.g. hopping on a sales call, signing up for a demo, etc). Not only are you finding out what’s working for them, but you’re saving yourself the time of testing out these elements yourself.
